What old maps would you like to see make a return to rotation?
-
I really want to see Ramjam makes it glorious return to competitive tf2. Not because it’s good, it really fucking sucks, but because I like jam. You got all kinds of jam to choose from; blueberry jam, grape jam, rammed jam, canned jam, can/am, bhop_monster_jam, and even strawberry jam. We need more jam based maps in rotation.
On a serious note I would actually like to play Badwater and Barnblitz Pro, at least in an experimental cup. Borneo was also fun, but the issue is that pushing last can be a nightmare, however I still think its worth giving it another shot, just to mix things up a little bit since to be honest playing the same 6 maps with one rotation every season is kinda boring.
-
Face it they are bad and should never return to play. It’s a waste of time for everyone involved if they did. It’s better to focus on new maps than beat the skeleton of a horse.
-
We should play new maps that are actively developed instead, because they may suck just as much but they have the potential to suck less
-
I am at the point where I really don’t care what I play on, old or new maps. Old maps might be fun but I see no reason to for the sake of trying them out
-
Ramjam isn’t really that bad. It’s definitely better than cascade and probably better than lakeside. Borneo is also not that bad. Last pushes are always hard and a lot of metas have changed since it was played last. I think it probably wouldn’t be as bad if we played it again. Badwater and barnblitz, while classic and nostalgic, are just terrible and should never be played in any form unless there was some kind of throwback cup. No point in putting terrible maps into an experimental map cup. We already know they’re bad.
-
@TheS4rr If we are doing a throwback cup, might as well make it badwater, ramjam, and for good measure throw in gullywash. Two dead horses, one cup.
-
Mothership I assume you mean borneo and not badwater, which would make sense although out of all the old maps I think borneo is clearly the most viable and I believe that it should still be in rotation. The only issue with borneo that I’m aware of is that rounds were normally longer than they are in the current map rotations, but Swiftwater used to take much longer to push as well.
Gullywash would not be fun in a throwback cup haha. It was very unfun the many years we played it. If a throwback cup were to have a cp map, I would suggest process or even sunshine. These were much more fun to play in hl than gully (although I always advocated for cp to be removed from hl).
-
@TheS4rr I don’t recall process being better than gully in any regard. Gully from my understanding was the only map that was even close to viable as a 5CP map for HL. I would love sunshine tho; mostly for nostalgia since the first season I played had sunshine and I map reviewed the shit out of that map.
-
None, they all sucked
-
Mothership For me, sunshine was more fun than both in hl. Gully is just smaller and chokier than process by nature, which did not make for a good hl map. Especially the last point.

This is a fairly common point of view, and I think it’s ultimately a matter of perspective. Especially at the lower level, players would be willing to sacrifice overall quality to prioritize diversity–however especially at the higher level, there is a desire to keep the best highlander maps available.
I’m probably in the group that would prefer seeing new maps being refined for highlander play–which would satisfy both parties. We get new maps for diversity while potentially maintaining quality. We just need our community to fundamentally change how we approach those maps to be more supportive
I don’t think we need older maps to return in the regular season, but I can definitely see people enjoying them in a cup or community event(doesn’t have to be hosted by rgl!)

throwback dot tf coming soon :DDD
-
Mothership 5cp in general is just not great in highlander. You may as well just play a koth map except when you cap in the mid fight you just win the round.

I know. This is why I am adamantly against ever playing 5cp again. HOWEVER, for the purposes of a throwback cup where we play old bad maps for nostalgia purposes, might as well toss in a 5cp to make those that keep requesting them to shut up and actually realize the issues that lie with it.
-
Mothership If we’re doing a throw back cup with bad maps I think we should play maps from early UGC (specifically DOM_canalzone)
-
Mothership https://www.ugcleague.com/maplist_tf2h.cfm UGC season 5 and before, only maps played at least 10 years ago. I nominate cp_pro_dustbowl, Dom_canalzone, and ctf_chaos.

A nostalgia map cup would be super cute. But going backward and playing old maps is not an ideal solution to a stagnant map pool.
I think it would be more interesting to make a new map cup. If the hl community is having trouble finding existing candidates, rgl could offer a prize of some kind (cash and or clout) to map developers who enter and win a contest to make maps for the cup. The map most warmly received by the competitive hl community based on survey results at the end of the cup would win and could potentially be added to the map pool.
This would be a good way to find new maps, discover what makes maps fun to play and balanced in hl, and get the mapping and competitive community talking to each other.
And if the new maps suck, it’s only for a weekend anyway and will still be novel and fun for the weekend.

a throwback cup would be good so that newer players who want old maps to come back can see how shit they all were
