Team Pictures For All!

In a distant past, in a much simpler time, everyone was able to truly express their team through the means of picture. Unfortunately, RGL has stripped us of our artistic means, only the top teams are given such a luxury (and froggieland but don’t worry about it). RGL has the infrastructure to do it, it is not a question of if, but rather when?
On some real shit though, one of the best parts of leading a team in UGC was making a ballin’ ass team picture to show your friends. It also helped teams identify each other, and was just kinda cool to have, and its a feature that would be awesome to have back.
thanks

perhaps now sicne they have been including the past seasons stuff it would be a more reason so include team logos for lower divisions. Maybe it could be a benefit given to teams who have stayed together for a while.
Truth be told though I really don’t care. if it gets added great. If not oh well

Let me preface, I think this is a great idea. I’m not trying to argue against it, but I think this was discussed in little detail a long while back, and there were arguments against it from a league standpoint iirc. If I’m wrong, don’t crucify me, I’m going off of memory of a forum post from year(s) ago at this point.
Those arguments against it were that it was meant to be a reward for playing in invite, and it was supposed to stay contained to a small enough group of teams that it’d be easy to moderate the quality of images, so that anyone from the outside seeing them would think they look, at the very least, professional-ish. With those two things in mind, I think it probably seemed natural to leave it only to invite teams.
However, I’m not really sure how much of an incentive it is for teams to play invite – I don’t think anyone wants to play invite specifically so they can have a team image or logo, and the only time they’re even referenced or cared about at all is in casts, so it’s not like lower level teams would ever have to have their team images shown prominently anywhere.

hey @cayorne and everyone - just posting to let you know that we, as the RGL admin team, have seen this forum post and are discussing it internally. we’ll let you know when we have more to tell you for sure
in the meantime feel free to drop y’all’s ideas - your input, and your reasons for why you want this (or why you might not want it), help us make these decisions.

Pros of team pictures
-Allows teams to distinguish themselves
-Generally a fun and cool look feature that livens up the website
-Good for team bonding
-Incentivizes more creative team names
-Allows for amateur casters to make graphics that are team appropriate
-a whole heckin’ heapin’ o’ funCons
-A few people are no doubt going to abuse it
-Might need to have people to moderate pictures
-Need a consistent size/format for the imageWorkarounds for Cons
-Only allow for teams to change pictures while they can change names, making the problem exclusive to preseason
-It will take literally like 2-3 people to moderate them, I personally would be more than willing to help myself if that is worth anything
-Give teams match penalties if they have a picture that outright and flagrantly disregards all RGL rules (i.e. hate symbols, racial slurs embedded within the picture, pictures intended to harass, etc)
-Require all pictures to be whatever resolution current ones are, uploaded in the proper file format.Thats just my two cents, I really loved this feature in UGC and bringing it back for RGL would be sick.
thanks.

Could maybe have a system where an image needs admin approval before showing publicly, rather than having to have people watch the site all the time.

Another con/pro you are forgetting is the quality assurance of the team images. Currently the logos used for teams in Invite are mostly made by the RGL Graphics team which ensures a certain level of quality that goes into them, as they should be.
What happens a few seasons from now if we were to allow teams to upload their own images and when they get to invite, be forced to use one created by the RGL Graphics team instead because it is a badly edited image made in windows paint?
Don’t take this feedback as me not wanting people to have team pictures, I am 100% for it, however these are considerations that the RGL staff have to consider. I mean just look at my avatar I always use. I made this in windows paint over 15 years ago.

Mothership i think, that this is ultimately a positive that allows for the community and rgl to reach eachother halfway
rgl already moderates names, i think the extra care going into moderating pictures will be appreciated or atleast not that much of a reach; while giving teams a way to define and express themselves; ie home depot with their multiseason legacy around the advanced level; or b&h in the past before RIB as examples. it helps give a team and player group identity and recognition to lower levels, which could help create the perception established teams and players as rolemodels for the rest of the community; which they absolutely are.
in addition, at an invite level; rgl will be allowed to prove itself as flexible and wise by taking smarter fights. if teams want to use their own goofy logos that express what they want to express; let them. it can be hard to convey the same message across different people, and there is minimal harm done in allowing them to input their own art.
this also allows for players to show that they can in fact be trusted, while allowing for untrustworthy ones to reveal themselves and make rgl’s job easier in the long term as it helps to root out harmful precedents; rather than said precedents remaining in the shadows.
trying to make it all consistent and forced doesn’t really help things, and i don’t think it warrants that much of a what if sort of issue, because it isn’t one. It’s an opportunity for trust and growth to occur. if people really want to represent their team via a low quality ms paint work, i don’t really see how it hurts anyone unless it’s blatantly offensive or tries to circumvent guidelines. i mean what, does rgl attract all of tf2’s 3 sponsors by making most invite level things done by their art team?
rgl can show themselves as mature rather than needlessly authoritative, while giving players a level of trust and expression which they appreciate. mutual trust is a thing that is rather lacked these days, let alone in a community such as this one. and the only way to get that sort of trust, is for people to meet eachother halfway and collaborate through compromise.
it’d be a bit more effort for rgl surely, but that effort is necessary to foster good relations with the community and ultimately helps league health due to the appreciation such effort brings; while also vaguely promotes creativity in naming due to there being more significance and thought put into names; as you also have the opportunity to be passionate about and create art to represent it. this could potentially vaguely lead to teams being more consistent in regards to their naming and multiseason team retention, which could increase perceived professionalism throughout the divisions. this would help rgl’s desire to have invite be seen as all professional or whatever they want with the team logos.
i just see the potential downsides here as things that could easily be upsides from the right perspective and if effort/care is given.
really, i think the fact that this discussion is required shows that rgl needs to refocus and pick better fights.

Mothership nothing is stopping rgl from simply remaking team logos for teams when they get to invite at a higher quality
also lets not pretend every team logo is good, i understand the rgl graphics team tries really hard and puts in a lot of time, and a good 95% of what they make is really awesome and looks super cool
however…
none of these are bad at all, as a matter of fact i like most of them, but if this is the standard, i don’t think the general playerbase will be unable to reach it
-
@cayorne TBF, I made the FroggieLand.com logo lol…
-
@cayorne only my man cutimus would request the logo to have 0-7 in the smoke LMAO
-
@TheS4rr thats what im saying, players are more than capable of making good looking team logos, and if the standard is the pictures shown, there shouldn’t be an issue
i think rgl could also have a contest for best team picture or something to incentivize teams to make good ones or something
@Constantly lol

This was my old team logo i whipped together in paint 3d in about 5 minutes, and I ran the team for few seasons before disbanding. They don’t need to be professionally done logos imo as long as some qc is there. tbh theres some of the ones from rgl graphics that look poop and I’m sure a more passionate team member with a slight interest can make one that fits them

Bliztank wow this is a very thoughtful reply bliztank i wonder if the admins will ever reply to your salient points

DavyC is necromancy an acquired skill or were you born with it

Why not just let the art team be the predecessors of choosing what’s allowed or not allowed as team logos each season, before season starts or during sign-ups or at least make a new team to do that specific task and have guidelines for it, it doesn’t seem that ridiculous of an idea, I’m sure at least 1 or two people can sign up for that to keep the middle ground, heck I would join as well without pay.
