Bring back 5cp to hl

@exa i get that you guys are trying to get maps that have active devs working on them, but at least put gully in the map cup and not the same 2-3 maps that have been played in the last exp cup. (or just put new maps that we havent seen yet)
if its at least denied by the players, then im pretty sure that would be fine.

i never got to experience 5CP hl, and playstyles have certainly changed since the last time it was in the map pool. i wouldn’t mind playing 5CP in some capacity

honestly i’d be down to play one 5cp map during some season, it’s interesting to have some variety every now and then! i would honestly rather try some random 5cp map than the ones that have been played before in hl though honestly

every time this discussion happens, someone will say "why dont we push it in the map test cups?
the point of those cups is to test the maps, in case the name didnt give it away. what changes to the map have happened since the last time we had gullywash? changing the timer on the config won’t do anything either. itll lead to a lot of round restarts because pushing in 5cp is so hard because so many classes in highlander deny space
can we please test ACTUAL new maps instead of every 2 years, asking “well maybe NOW gullywash will work in highlander.” some people in this community act as if we haven’t spent several seasons and multiple years playing 5cp on highlander and concluding every single time that it was fucking dumb. also im very sorry to the rgl zoomers who never got to play 5cp but i really dont want to put it in a season just so a new generation of players can get a taste of the worst experience the gamemode has to offer. this is an example of how we as a community should learn from our past.
the only 5cp map i could see fitting in highlander is villa, because it is a huge map and all the choke points are big. compare any door on villa to trying to push shutter or river or choke on gullywash

5cp has been so ass for HL, it may be better with new maps but with the previous 5cp maps that have been tried (gully, process, vanguard even) have not been fun

@pickelz look dude first off I will admit the one time I start asking for 5cp is when map makers appear from thin air and start making some maps that might have some chance sure man that’s on me. but like dude… “this is an example of how we as a community should learn from our past” mate it wasnt as bad as you think it was just give it a shot like we all had our map moments but to act like this is just a waste of time is just lazy and lame if we can ban product for a season then golly man we can at least give this a shot.
it doesnt have to be gully but I would like to show the new guys a taste of what we did before in a way that they can enjoy without “suffering” the way we did in the past.

@emily I am gladly willing to find a new 5cp map that could maybe convince people to give it another go I love 5cp and would love to do anything to help get it back in for another season.(this is a side goal)

For the most recent map cup that was organized by the HL admin team last year, Ramjam and Borneo were tested which did not have active map developers nor did these maps receive any gameplay changes prior to testing. After the players tested these maps and filled out the survey, the reception for the maps was unfavorable – failing to receive at least 50% support from players. The only map that has seen play more than once in the map cup was Synthetic. Each time that it was played in the cup, it had a new version with new gameplay changes that the map developer added to address player feedback.
Ultimately, it should be noted that the RGL HL admin team has a new project for new maps in development and is working with both players and the developers to test out new maps, provide feedback, and ultimately give these new maps a polish before they are tested in a more serious cup environment to be considered for league play. This has been done for the past several months.

@exa would you be willing to add a 5cp map in your project if I manage to fix the kinks and what not on a map that I think would be playable/enjoyable to the public? I know I’m probably not going to get it done/find something by the time this cup starts but I actually would like to play 5cp in comp again and I’m willing to take the time needed to make it fun to play.

I think the problems you and Exa listed aren’t necessarily problems with the map/game mode, but issues with the class. Half of what you said for engie gameplay on those maps were just sitting on sniper and wrangling, which is what engineer does on every other map anyways. But just because that’s what the “”meta”” is, doesn’t mean there’s more room for variability. On product you have little room for variability. That’s not the case when it comes to 5cp maps, and what I mean by a “breath of fresh air” is that there’s room for trying out more wacky strategies that will actually breed success rather than being forced to play the meta either because of social pressure or because there’s literally no other way to play the map (product concrete wrangler).
Even still, I think the middle ground of this argument of 5cp is to try new 5cp maps instead of old ones.

Look how common it is for 6s team to park the bus on any given 5cp map. Now imagine that with a 450hp heavy, level 3 gun, and a pyro. For the top level of play, you could probably see some really interesting starts to break the stalemates (or even to prevent them entirely) but I feel at lower levels of play, it will devolve into one team ubers in to destroy the gun, the other team ubers them back, and the process continues until one team manages to get a lucky spy pick or something. Look how stalemate-y steel is, with long drawn-out fights for B control or wishbone. 5cp is basically steel without the ability to create pressure from different points. It will be boring to play, and boring to watch.

@GeneralNick cp_steel has stalemates the way it does cause it’s stopwatch mate… When your goal for one side is to legit defend as man points as possible it’s kinda silly to be comparing to a gamemode where there isn’t a time to beat it’s just get as many points as you can before the timer ends or get 5 before the other.

@Chocc the problem is you will get to a point where teams choose to just park the bus, not actually push up and make things interesting. At least with steel you’re supposed to defend, on 5cp, you’re not really supposed to just park the bus and defend to win. Remember that there are other divs beyond advanced and invite, and IMO teams in lower divs will struggle to break through the turtle setups which will be really boring for them as they try and push last for 30 minutes. It is less noticeable on steel because you can create pressure from other points on the map, so a team can’t just stack 9 people on B, whereas here you can stack your whole team on one site.

An interesting point had been raised re: how the b4nny config would change this.
I’d think that it would just result in more round resets and not meaningfully reduce parking the bus, though. Pushing into a parked bus to avoid a round reset, as the team that holds mid would supposedly be incentivized to do, would just mean they get wiped because of bad positions and then rolled to their own last. So they’d just let the round timer run out.
