Addressing Racism/Anti-LGBTQ Speech on Off-Platform Media
-
@Kawaiyi no, i definitely love to have my perspective challenged, and every time i feel like i make a decent point you ignore it and speak in slogans and reply to someone else
-
@hew Once again, missing the point. people have a right to privacy behind closed doors and this is a huge overreach by RGL that isn’t even feasible if implemented
-
@Kawaiyi RGL isn’t “perpetuating racism” by not policing what people do in private. Besides that, its not RGL’s goal to eradicate racism. RGL is a tf2 league first and foremost, not a social justice platform.
-
@Papaya it hurts the league and makes it less welcoming if there are a lot of racist people or other hateful people on rgl though
-
@Papaya its not about being against racism, rgl should be against racism, this is about the abuse this kind of administration can do, getting people in hot water when they’re just making stupid edgy jokes

@hedaeoh are there though? are there really racist people that are actively and publicly racist unless you go looking for them?
why look for things that you deliberately don’t want to see them complain about seeing them.
-
@hedaeoh If they aren’t being racist on RGL platforms how does it hurt the league? The only way people would even KNOW they were racist is if they chose to engage said players in private.
-
@Kawaiyi you know your posts are offending me. Why can’t you respect me by refraining from posting?
-
@Papaya because an rgl-peripheral platform influences the health of the league
-
@Kawaiyi Why can’t people respect the African American community by allowing us to use our word without fear of being banned?
-
@Kawaiyi Once again, all actions on rgl platforms are subject to punishment. I think you are begging the league to protect you from people outside of the league. If you feel so deeply about that just distance yourself from those people. At some point this tf2 league will not be able to punish someone who says a slur and its just how it is.
-
@vibeisveryo Private discord servers are not an RGL peripheral platform.
-
@Papaya you dont engage with people knowing they are hateful before hand lol. u could try and join a team, then in the server find out that they are hateful which for newer players who are included in the hated group, would make rgl seem like a very hostile community
-
@Papaya I would kinda disagree here, but even though they are it still doesnt make sense for RGL to step in for dialogue.
-
@Kawaiyi because people arent perfect and make mistakes, make stupid jokes, and as young people, should be allowed to make those stupid choices without being banished from a large part of this niche community of hardcore players of a cult following supported game
this isnt about protecting the right to harass people of color or sexuality, and if you refuse to see the argument we’re trying to get you to understand, i just kind of give up
-
@hedaeoh All you have to do in that case is leave. Nothing is stopping you from making your own team with your own rules about slurs. If playing with somebody bothers you, then simply don’t play with them, and take solace in the fact that they aren’t allowed to be racist in scrims and matches.

@hew said in Addressing Racism/Anti-LGBTQ Speech on Off-Platform Media:
It is within RGL’s right to ask you to conduct yourselves in a non-racist fashion even behind closed doors and it’s not a very large ask.
You say this but offer no real reason why RGL should be, at all, concerned about how a player acts behind closed doors given that their behavior isn’t inflicting harm on another person or player. It is their job to be a video game league, not the moral police of all TF2 players in all walks of their life. If players like randyw or Mono72 fail to uphold the conduct expectations in official channels then they should be banned for those offenses. No one is saying that you should not be able to be banned for hate speech, merely that RGL ultimately has no reason to ban players for speech and servers which are, at best, tangentially related to RGL .
-
@hedaeoh as someone has said before, I don’t go to a bar, find a group of racists, and automatically think that bar is only populated by racists. just doesn’t make sense lmao
-
@Kastaling no, but the problem of racism is essentially endemic in any video gaming community
