Division names are ???

Ask any person who doesn’t play RGL to put these in order based on skill level and chances are they’re going get to them wrong, and now that staff are introducing even more ambiguous vernacular even people who play in the league are second-guessing their order

Newcomer/Amateur - Adjectives that basically mean the same thing, although I can relinquish and say that newcomer is apt in describing the lowest division considering it seems to be catered primarily for brand new players, whilst amateur implies they have some surface level knowledge of the game

Intermediate - I’m okay with this one, serves as a blanket term for those with some level of competence above Amateur

Advanced - Also okay with this, Advanced and Intermediate are easy to distinguish

Main - This is where stuff starts to get ??? like why use a noun for this division when the rest are adjectives? Also Main? Main what? What does that even mean? Main division? Feels odd when every other division adopts a descriptive adjective. Main is just a ridiculously ambiguous word without any concrete meaning.

Challenger - ??? The most equivocal word on the planet. Also a noun which clashes in a similar fashion as Main. How is anyone supposed to know where on the hierarchy this division lies? Challenger and Invite are practically interchangeable in terms of skill level because of how ambiguous the word Challenger is. Why was this decision made? Actually baffling if I’m going to be completely honest.

“Challenger” as a division name also holds massive connotation as being the highest level of play because of League of Legends, just thought I’d mention because it seemed relevant and multiple people I’ve spoken with agree that this is misleading.

Invite - Has previous association with the highest division of ESEA, makes sense in the context of TF2 but nowhere else. Also I’m not terribly familiar with ESEA as a whole but I was under the impression that the division was called Invite because it was comprised of teams who were Invited to join the division as they were comprised of the best players in NA/EU etc., which RGL does not.

Why can’t we just purge the unnecessarily vague names and adopt something that’s easily recognizable

    Iron
    Steel
    Silver
    Gold
    Platinum

Kumori gets it, It’s just that simple.

  • he be spittin facts doe

  • How about a different perspective? Why use random names as division titles when we can do what Europe did/RGL did early on in Prolander? I think it’s really easy to tell what order these go in:

    Div-2
    Div-5
    Div-3
    Div-4
    Div-7
    Div-1
    Div-6

Plus, if divisions get split, or more are needed, do we just do what UGC did and have Steel-Blu/Steel-Red? Which one is better, are they the same? If we want simple division titles, just go to a Division # format, imo.

  • This is a good post.

Main is a bad division name for sure. Use something else such as “Center”

  • @firepow I agree in the sense that main is a bad division name but I really don’t like having the division I’m playing in being called “Center”.

  • what the fuck is challenger is that some lander shit

  • new concept list

    Newcomer
    Amateur
    Experienced
    Primary
    Advanced
    Elite

  • the names are fine and anyone who bothers to play will know what divs are which skill level purely based on the order the divs show up in on the site

just like u wouldn’t expect someone who’s never played CSGO, league, dota, rocket league, etc to know what ranks mean what, they’ll figure it out by playing the game or by simply looking it up (same result here!)

  • Even though I vastly prefer metal names to the current division names they aren’t confusing at all. The only thing I dislike is having to refer to the old ESEA IM division as ESEA IM

  • Names are whatever, I don’t really care what they’re called. I’d prefer to keep the current names just to stay consistent with previous seasons. THough I do wish there was an alternative to main since people get that often mixed up with playing a class and starter/sub

All three of these games you just name dropped have very recognizable progressions amongst their rank names though? Designated specifically for the purpose of being easy to understand at a glance and avoiding unnecessary ambiguity for those who are unfamiliar with the system.

    League: Bronze -> Silver -> Gold -> Platinum -> Diamond -> Master -> Challenger
CSGO: Silver -> Gold -> Master -> Legendary
Rocket League: Bronze -> Silver -> Gold -> Platinum -> Diamond -> Champion

Idk how mentioning these games is even relevant at all when they serve as the direct antithesis to RGL’s current naming scheme.

Kumori + these game designers get it

In a theoretical world, where I’ve never been to a McDonald’s before, and for some reason the company decided to give their milkshake sizes some esoteric naming scheme for the sake of being edgy/zany/wacky etc., regardless of the sentiment that “anyone who bothers to eat here will know what size is which”, I’m still not gonna have any clue what to do because I’ve never been there before.

Surely RGL has an influx of new players each season, so simply saying “eh whatever people will figure it out on their own so why bother making it straightforward” makes zero sense to me, especially when I have witnessed firsthand brand new players who have genuine difficulty traversing your confusing website/ambiguous division names/unhelpful staff etc.

I’ve had numerous qualms with this entire operation since it’s inception and regardless of my retirement/inactivity I’m going to refrain from divulging further out of fear receiving the same RGL ban/subsequent blacklisting that has befallen a good majority of my peers for challenging your admins.

At least change Main to something else please, that one is the worst offender

lol big fan of this whole idea that RGL stomps out any idea differing from the admins as if any of us care enough about random peoples’ opinions on the league or staff like that, theres a huge difference between saying the n word and getting banned for it, vs stating yr opinion and me calling u a dumbass for it

anyway while i agree that certain pieces of the website are a bit confusing or out of place, clicking League and then League Standings literally brings you right here with this at the very top

so any idea that you don’t know which divs are which is hilarious, not to mention they’re literally just the ESEA divs but we changed Open to Amateur to avoid confusion

  • As someone whose previous experience of comp divisions was indeed the old UGC set, I’ve never thought Main was as confusing as all that, although there might be a better alternative out there for sure.

Funnily enough, when I first saw the announcement about Challenger I actually thought it made a lot of sense (as someone who never played LoL), since it’s people who are up-and-coming challengers to the Invite champions.

Really looking forward to the Caves & Cliffs update! You and your team did a really good job on Update Aquatic, can’t wait to see more. Will you add funny pineapple blocks?

  • Premiership, Division 1, Division 2, Mid, Low, Open

  • Really don’t think the Div. names are confusing. Feels like overthinking and trying to fix a problem that isn’t present.
