amnesty for demo checks
-
although demo checks are greatly beneficial for anti-cheat and the penalty does incentivize people to record consistently
this is fucking ridiculous
can we get a wipe on demo warnings after like a year?
i dont see a point penalizing people so harshly for offenses that are a full 6 seasons apart
-
demo bans also can fuck with playoffs, this example doesn’t fit with my proposed 1 year but it still sucks (HHJ) -
cayorne as well, HHJ’s demo ban was made 2 weeks late. he should’ve had this ban end this week from what i’ve been told by a friend on his team
-
cayorne I second this, for example with my personal situation I got hit with a demo warning due to my p-rec not working around the start of when demo checks became a thing. This was 3 years ago and it’s still on my profile, and if I mess up at all I will receive a 2 week ban. I understand the importance of demo checks and the warning system but for them to be permanently stuck to your profile when some of the time it isn’t even your fault that you don’t have the demo is ridiculous. I hope that this rule can be changed sooner rather than later and good on you for posting about this, it’s a topic I’ve heard murmurs about but nobody has publicly talked about it “from my knowledge” until now so, yay

BBL said in amnesty for demo checks:

It’s worth noting that there is a reset after 4 years, so while they are permanently on your profile as a log, they don’t impact you forever.

as someone who is on a team that has 2 warnings for not submitting demos and had a player get banned for 2 weeks for not submitting them mid season, i still don’t understand the difficult it must be to record demos, especially when it comes down to players who have played for a prolonged enough period of time to understand that they will be demo checked. starting to record a demo is a very easy process (that can also be manual with stuff such as prec) that a lot of people mess up and that, to me, is a little bit insane.
with that being said i do think that 4 years is a little bit too long of a period for demo warnings. witness, the player on my team who got banned had his 1st warning be in 2021 back in season 9 of hl. a bit absurd that he got banned for not submitting demos 6 seasons after
-
katz I agree with four years being too long. If there’s three seasons per year for the foreseeable future, that’s twelve seasons before their two demo warnings from when they were new go away, and then the one time they screw up they get banned for 3 months.
Season 3 of sixes ended less than four years ago. Sixes just finished season 12. That’s 9 seasons. RGL didn’t even have sixes until 5 years ago. The amount of changes that happen in four years is insane, and for something that is as forgettable as recording demos? I’d argue for it to be a year before a warning gets removed, at the highest.
-
Xenagos get a college degree faster than get demo checks reset
thats insane dude
-
It’s arguably not that relevant but seems a little silly that the demo reset time is double that of an initial cheating ban lol. I think even 2 years is pretty long personally for the demo amnesty but 4 seems obviously excessive.
-
4 years wildin man make it one year it aint that big of a deal. if u missed a demo check at the end of season 3 of rgl highlander you would still not have the initial warning removed by now. 3 seasons is a sweet spot for it at one year lowkey
-
demo bans should reset every other season, no reason why not
-
How is this fair for witness
-
yea it makes a lot of sense witness is hit with a 3 month ban because his prec broke when his 1st strike was literally 2.5 years ago, why do demo bans take literally 4 years to reset? a lot of players don’t even play tf2 for 4 years straight, it may as well be a permanent stain on your record that u can slowly rack up for forgetting to record or having a bug with an ancient program or forgetting to reinstall prec after changing your cfg. meanwhile cheaters run around willy nilly and only get banned if they literally spinbot in a POV demo
-
Basically this demo rule as it stands is completely braindead and makes literally 0 sense. I understand wanting to enforce sending in demos so that people who are suspected of cheating can’t just dodge demo checks, however, if someone were cheating i’m confident that, despite how historically slow anti-cheat can be, they would be caught before the end of the season or the season after. Therefore, there is no reason why demo check bans/warnings should not be reset every season/every other season, kinda like how it is for teams. Also bottom line is, Witness gets a 3 month ban for a PREC error (an entire season ban). Also, it’s unfair that Witness being a long time player means he is more likely to get a ban like this than someone just starting out, it’s almost as if RGL is punishing you for playing longer/more seasons. I’m not super pissed about my teammate being banned for the rest of the season but this rule seriously needs to be looked at.
