It all depends. I’ve been playing tf2 on and off for about 9 years now (6.5k+ hours) so I have some idea on how to answer this question.
Since you asked this question in rgl. I’m guessing you are referring to how much hours you need to have until you are good enough to take on invite level players, which is the highest level comp experience you can get. I’ll cut to the chase and say “hours do not matter” like at all. I’ve seen countless players in my years of playing this game where players with 300 hours in the game destroying a veteran with 2k+ hours.
If you are young like in your early-teens you probably have more potential to improve than players who started playing in there 20s or late-teens. Kids are more likely to improve faster. Since their brains are like sponges
But the main aspect you should focus on is DM. Play lots of DM and main one class you enjoy playing in comp. If it’s sixes unfortunately you’re restricted to playing only soldier, scout, demo and medic or some other offclasses. But that’s okay since tf2 is a game where the skill learned from other classes can be somewhat translated to other classes as well.
For DM I’d recommend playing either lots of SOAPDM or MGE (don’t play endif) and try playing ammomod arena for soldier. This is a really broad topic so just do your own research online. There are tons of guide online. Try not to take it too seriously and take some break if you feel like you are not improving. Also, try looking back at things and ask yourself why you died there.
There’s a lotta things that can hold back your improvement. Like peripherals and stuff like that. I started playing on my mom’s old laptop; using the track-pad to aim. Either way just have fun playing the game. Find players you like and play with them
Hope that helps
